What is it?

A General Power of Attorney is a legally written document where person A, the donor, can place the management of his or her personal and/or business affairs with person B, the attorney. Usually, General Powers of Attorney are created for a set period of time, in cases where you might be going away or unable to act for some other reason, and you wish someone else to have the authority to act on your behalf.

The Power of Attorney will usually end either at a specified time, or upon the request of the person who granted the power at any time. It is important to remember that you can revoke the document at any time.

It is extremely important to remember that with a General Power of Attorney, you are personally liable for the actions taken by the attorney who is acting on your behalf. Therefore, you should only grant such a power to someone you trust.
